Phellos
An old city set on a steep ridge; its name means “stony ground”. It declined as its harbour Antiphellos grew.

The mother city and its harbour
Patara – Phellos – Antiphellos
One of the longest sections, climbing to the ridges by way of Kalkan and Bezirgan. The names of the two cities here declare their relation: above lies **Phellos** — “the stony place” — and below on the coast **Antiphellos**, that is, “opposite Phellos”. In time the harbour outgrew the mother city; the theatre of Antiphellos still looks out to sea, while Phellos is silent on its ridge.

The Twelve Gods
Their cult places are not in city centres but out in the country and at road junctions. That suggests the gods were held to be the protectors not of a city but of a region. They were the gods of borders, of passes and of flocks.
